Social Geek Radio Co-Hosts Walk in NYC

During a GeekItOut segment on Social Geek Radio, AK Stout shared an app, Charity Miles. That simple introduction sent AK and I to the Big Apple to meet Charity Miles Founder Gene Gurkoff.

The rest isn’t history, it’s just the beginning!

AK, Gene and I were met by 13 other walkers in New York City in front of Tasti D-Lite, Times Square. Some were friends  of AK’s and some knew me. We also had  the opportunity to meet some of our IMG_3695Twitter friends IRL (in real life).  There were others who had never met either of us but heard of the event, Walk With a Friend … For a Friend and joined us for our trek.

AK and I were worried that we would struggle keeping our smartphones charged for the day. But our Gadgetista friend Bonnie Sharon aka Cellular Chloe came to our rescue and brought us great Magicstick phone chargers!

The weather rocked!

New York greeted us with a clear crisp Fall day. With smartphones in hand, apps downloaded we took off for a 5.5 mile trek through Manhattan and Central Park. The route was mapped out in advance via Google Maps and SCVNGR.

Walkers came from CT, DC, MD, NJ, NY, TX and Paris! We visited Rockefeller Center, rode  The Central Park Carousel, climbed to the top of Belvedere Castle and visited many other landmarks. Even though we had walkers from New York there were landmarks on our trek that were new to even them!

As Gene says “changing the world is a team sport”.   If you own a smartphone and walk, bike or run, download the app and contribute your steps to a charity.

New York City was the first of what  will be many “Walk With a Friend” events. Watch for us to visit your city soon or contact us to learn more about sponsoring a Charity Miles Walk With a Friend event with your franchise or organization.
